  1. Dr B.R. Ambedkar was an Indian jurist, economist and social reformer who fought for the rights of the Dalit community. 
  2. He played a pivotal role in the drafting (or making) of the Indian Constitution. He considers as one of the architects of modern India.
  3. Dr Ambedkar was born on 14th April 1891 in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh to a poor Dalit family.
  4. Also, he faced discrimination and social ostracism throughout his life due to his caste. But he rose above it to become one of the most educated men of his time.
  5. Dr Ambedkar studied law and economics at Columbia University and the London School of Economics and called to the bar at Gray’s Inn in 1923.
  6. He returned to India and started practicing law but he soon realized that the legal system stacked against people like him belonging to lower castes.
  7. In 1927, he founded the Scheduled Castes Federation which fought for the political rights of Dalits.
  8. Moreover, in 1930, he led a mass movement for the right to worship at the Kalaram Temple in Nashik which denied to Dalits for centuries.
  9. In 1935, he authored the book “Annihilation of Caste” which was a scathing critique of Hinduism and its caste system.
  10. Dr Ambedkar passed away on 6th December 1956 but his legacy continues to inspire millions of Indians.

In 1948, after years of campaigning, Ambedkar finally also succeeded in getting the Indian Constitution amended to include safeguards for Dalits.
