Vidyasagar was born in a village in West Bengal in 1820. He was married at a very young age and had two children. He lost his wife and children early in life and this made him very sad. He became a teacher and then a principal of a school. He put a lot of effort into improving society. He opened up many schools for the girls and also started many social reforms. He is known as the father of modern Bengali literature. He wrote many books which are still read by the people today. At the age of 71, he passed away in 1891.   1. In the village of Birsingha, Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar was born on September 26, 1820.
  2. He was an Indian social reformer and polymath who fought for the upliftment of women and orphans in Bengal. 
  3. He is also known for his work in Sanskrit scholarship and Bengali literature.
  4. Vidyasagar means “ocean of learning” in Sanskrit.
  5. He was orphaned at a young age and raised by his maternal uncle, Ramnarayan Roy.
  6. He studied at Midnapore College and Calcutta Medical College before working as a headmaster of Fort William College, Calcutta.
  7. In 1839, he married Dinamani Devi with whom he had five children.
  8. Vidyasagar campaigned extensively for the introduction of widow remarriage within Hinduism and helped draft legislation on the same which was passed in 1856. 
  9. He also worked towards abolishing the practice of child marriage and sati.
  10. Vidyasagar left the world on 29 July 1891 at the age of 71 due to complications from diabetes.
